TATAMI BEDROOMS

2022  |  COMPLETE  |  VANCOUVER, BC  |  INTERIORS

A tatami room is one of the most beautiful ways to make a small home live larger.

In this laneway house, the tatami room was designed as a flexible, quiet, multi purpose space. During the day, it can be used for yoga, stretching, meditation, tea, reading, or simply as a calm room away from the rest of the house. In the evening, it can become a guest room by rolling out a shikifuton and kakefuton, following the Japanese tradition of storing bedding away during the day to free up valuable floor space.

What makes tatami so special is that it is not just a design feature. It changes how a room is used. It invites a slower, lower, more grounded way of living. It creates a space that feels intentional, calm, and adaptable, especially in compact homes where every square foot matters.

At Longpre Architecture, we design homes that are practical, beautiful, and deeply livable. Tatami rooms are one of the ways we help clients create spaces with soul, flexibility, and cultural depth.

If you are interested in adding a tatami room, Japanese inspired room, meditation space, guest room, or flexible floor based living area to your home, we would be happy to help you explore what is possible.
